Michael Chiesa: Vet looking to follow up win over Tony Ferguson
Michael Chiesa (17-7) is coming off a much-needed win over Tony Ferguson in August. Prior to that submission win, he had lost his last three fights but that win albeit against an ailing Ferguson will give him a major lift. This bout is just Chiesa’s third since November 2021 as he has struggled with injuries but if he is to stay relevant, he will be eager to get a win under his belt here and to stay active.
Max Griffin: 39-year-old has won five of last seven
Max Griffin (20-10) has had a good run of late winning five of his last seven bouts in the UFC. The 39-year-old comes off a split decision win over Jeremiah Wells in February and that had followed a unanimous decision loss against Michael Morales. His last five fights have all gone the distance and while he remains durable having only been stopped once in 30 pro fights, his punching power appears to be waning a touch.
Michael Chiesa vs Max Griffin Prediction
This is another really good piece of matchmaking between two fighters at similar stages of their careers and both needing a win to stay relevant.
Chiesa has not been overly active in recent times and this will be the first time he has fought twice in a calendar year since 2021. Getting some momentum and just being active will certainly help him as he now meets Griffin.
Griffin has some good wins under his belt over the last few years but that could have looked very different had his last two wins via split decision gone the other way. His opponents have been really well-matched for him and he has risen to the challenge on a number of occasions.
This feels like a step up for him however. Chiesa may have lost three of his last four but he has been fighting the likes of Vicente Luque, Sean Brady and Kevin Holland.
The quality of opponent has to be considered when looking at both records and Chiesa has been fighting at the higher level.
Griffin will certainly pose a tough test for Chiesa and they do look relatively well matched in this one which makes this fight so appealing. Our preference however is with Chiesa to edge a decision.
Prediction: Michael Chiesa to win by decision
