Marta Kostyuk won a topsy-turvy clash with Veronika Kudermetova to make it the round-of-16 stage of the Madrid Open. She raced into a commanding lead but was pegged back in the second yet still managed to win out 6-0 4-6 6-4. She couldn’t seal the win when serving for the match at 5-3 but earned a late break as she made the fourth-round of a 1000 event for the third consecutive time this season.
Anastasia Potapova will be her next opponent as the Russian battled her way past Sofia Kenin in a thrilling three-set match. She saved two match points in the deciding set tiebreak as she came from a set down to win 3-6 6-4 7-6 (6).
This will be their first encounter on clay though Potapova does lead the head-to-head 2-1. However, the Ukrainian did win their last match against each other at Indian Wells last year, winning in straight sets.
These two have both had decent seasons and are very evenly matched. We can see this one going all the way.
