Maria Sakkari picked up consecutive wins for the first time since the Adelaide International in early January as she defeated 29th seed Magda Linette 7-6 6-3 to reach the third-round. It was a strong performance from the Greek, particularly on serve, and she can take some newly-found confidence from her two victories when she takes on Jasmine Paolini.

Paolini was in dominant form in her second-round match, crushing Katie Boulter with the loss of just three service games, winning 6-1 6-2. The Italian benefitted from a truly horrendous performance from the Brit, who racked up 21 unforced errors, but it was still the perfect way for the sixth seed to begin her campaign.

The head-to-head is 1-1, with Sakkari winning their only encounter on clay. She defeated Paolini 6-2 6-3 in the second-round of the French Open in 2021 though the Italian has improved considerably as a player since then. Paolini won their last match in Dubai a year ago in straight sets.

Paolini should have too much for Sakkari and we’re backing her to win in straight sets.
