Despite having now qualified for the Australian Open main draw for six years running, that elusive place in the second round has remained out of reach for Marcos Giron. This is comfortably the American’s weakest Grand Slam, having made the second round of Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows at least twice across his career.

Yannick Hanfmann has also struggled in Melbourne across his career, but he has at least reached the second round before, doing so in 2022 after beating Australian and home-favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets. The draw has been kind here to the 33-year-old German and his significant height advantage could play to his favour on the hard court.

It would be a surprise if this game ended quickly and we could well see it go the distance between these two. But in the end, it’s hard to ignore Giron’s struggles at the Australian Open down the years and backing Hanfmann has to be favoured.
