Manchester United have not improved since the appointment of Ruben Amorim and are looking over their shoulder as an in-form Newcastle United travel to Old Trafford.

Man Utd Preview: Hellish performances from the Red Devils

Manchester United are struggling down in the bottom-half of the Premier League at the moment. Ruben Amorim has just ticked over a month into the job but problems remain as they come into this one on the back of a 2-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

That Boxing Day loss means United have now managed just four victories in Amorim’s ten matches across all competitions with three of those four wins needing comebacks and the other coming against a poor Everton side earlier this month.

Newcastle Preview: Flying Magpies

Eddie Howe was perhaps under pressure a few weeks ago but the Magpies have since progressed into the semi-finals of the EFL Cup and are also finishing 2024 with a flourish, winning their last three Premier League games and scoring 11 goals in the process.

After back-to-back 4-0 hammerings of Leicester City and Ipswich Town earlier this month, Newcastle then defeated Aston Villa by three goals to nil on Boxing Day with a scoreline that perhaps flattered the Villains as the Geordies ran rampant at St James’ Park.

Man Utd Team News: Fernandes & Ugarte suspensions

For the third time this season, captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off the other day and he is now missing through suspension for United alongside fellow former Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte, whilst Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount are all out injured.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Onana; Yoro, Maguire, Martinez; Mazraoui, Casemiro, Mainoo, Dalot; Diallo, Garnacho; Hojlund

Unavailable: Lindelof (Injured), Shaw (Injured), Ugarte (Suspended), Fernandes (Suspended), Mount (Injured)

Questionable:

Newcastle Team News: Botman close

Sven Botman has returned to training in recent weeks and is getting closer to full fitness but is expected to remain unavailable for the next couple of weeks. Nick Pope remains sidelined through injury, too, alongside Jamaal Lascelles and Callum Wilson.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Dubravka; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Gordon

Unavailable: Pope (Injured), Botman (Fitness), Lascelles (Injured), Krafth (Injured), Wilson (Injured)

Questionable: Trippier (Fitness), Livramento (Illness)

Man Utd vs Newcastle Prediction

Manchester United have not been a good side for a very long time. Erik ten Hag was not the only problem but he wasn’t providing any solutions and now Ruben Amorim must identify the problem and swiftly find a solution to prevent their worst ever finish in the Premier League. Newcastle have discovered a fluency in attack that has been missing throughout the campaign and, as weird as it may seem, backing an away win appears the safest bet for this one.

Man Utd vs Newcastle Tip: Newcastle to win
