Mainz Preview: The overachievers

Mainz have been outstanding this season and they are the story of the season in terms of overachievement in the Bundesliga as they sit in an excellent position to earn themselves UEFA Champions League qualification.

They extended their winning streak in Germany’s top-flight to four matches thanks to an impressive and comfortable 3-1 defeat of Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park last weekend thanks to goals from Paul Nebel, Dominik Kohr and Nadiem Amiri.

Freiburg Preview: Continuing their overachievement

Despite the departure of long-term manager Christian Streich last summer, Freiburg have managed to continue to overachieve in the Bundesliga with Streich’s former club captain, Julian Schuster, at the helm and continuing their punching above of their weight.

Freiburg come into this weekend’s trip to Mainz on the back of back-to-back goalless draw against Augsburg and RB Leipzig to mean they have now kept six successive clean sheets since losing by two goals to one at home to Bayern Munich in January.

Mainz Team News: Burkardt injury

Mainz’ top scorer Jonathan Burkardt was not forced off against Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend and he remains a doubt for this one. They also have a few key absentees, such as Stefan Bell, Maxim Dal and Danny da Costa, with the latter being a fresh injury issue.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Zentner; Widmer, Jenz, Kohr; Caci, Sano, Amiri, Mwene; Nebel, Lee, Sieb

Unavailable: Bell (Injured), Dal (Injured), Da Costa (Injured)

Questionable: Burkardt (Injured)

Freiburg Team News: Still no Kyereh

Freiburg do not have any fresh issues to deal with this weekend but they still do have a few issues as Daniel-Kofi Kyereh remains sidelined due to a knee injury, whilst Manuel Gulde has a back injury and Max Rosenfelder is dealing with illness.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Atubolu; Sildillia, Ginter, Lienhart, Gunter; Eggestein, Osterhage; Doan, Holer, Dinkci; Adamu

Unavailable: Gulde (Injured), Rosenfelder (Illness), Kyereh (Injured)

Questionable:

Mainz vs Freiburg Prediction

Mainz have been in magnificent form of late but there will be slight concerns over the injuries picked up by Danny da Costa and Jonathan Burkardt. Without Burkardt, they still have attacking prowess with the likes of Armando Sieb able to step in alongside Nadiem Amiri, Paul Nebel and Lee Jae-sung. They face a Freiburg side, though, that will believe at this stage they can shut down any team in the Bundesliga and with Mainz’ form naturally going to come to an end relatively soon, it could be good value to side with Freiburg in this one.

Mainz vs Freiburg Tip: Double chance – Freiburg to win or draw
