Magdalena Frech enjoyed a dominant win in the second-round of the Cincinnati Open as she beat Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets. The Pole dropped just four games as she won 6-1 6-3 after one hour and 11 minutes. Ostapenko committed 12 double faults and was out of sorts for large parts of the match, but Frech remained consistent throughout and can now look forward to a test against world number two Elena Rybakina.
The Kazakh came through in straight sets against Taylor Townsend. It was a quick turnaround for Rybakina after her run to the final of the Canadian Open just a few days earlier, but she was always in control against Townsend as she won 6-3 6-4.
Rybakina leads the head-to-head 2-0, having last defeated Frech in Washington last year. She began her campaign with an impressive victory, and if her serve is firing, she should be able to navigate her way through this encounter.
