Madison Keys got the better of fellow American player Ann Li in two sets last round and faces an opponent in Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who also faced someone from the same country in round one, that being Irina-Camelia Begu, whom Ruse defeated whilst dropping just four games.

The manner of Ruse’s victory was extremely impressive, the Romanian showing a real clinical edge when it came to points on her serve, despite only a 59% first serve conversion. She also won five of eight break points, although Keys won three from three in comparison against Li, who both players can clutch up under pressure.

It would be no surprise to see this contest go the distance, despite the underlining power of Keys. The speed generated on the hard court should favour Keys, but Ruse is a fighter and won’t go down quietly. Backing a three-set encounter looks a smart play.
