Madison Keys, a two-time semi-finalist at the Australian Open, was involved in an enthralling second-round contest with Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the second round and had to use all of her experience to come through 7-5 in the deciding set.

The American, who warmed up for the Grand Slam by winning the Adelaide International last week, will now take on an opponent she defeated 6-1, 6-2 in the final of the 500-rated Internationaux de Strasbourg last year, albeit on clay.

Danielle Collins was also given a tough test last time out, defeating Australian hope Destanee Aiava in three sets in a match in which she served 12 double faults. A finalist in 2022, Collins has not looked at her best in Melbourne with a lack of recent competitive action clearly affecting her. If she was to defeat her compatriot here and reach the last 16 though, it would surely make her decision to postpone her retirement a worthwhile one.

An all-American clash is always worth a watch and this could be decided by small margins. In a contest were momentum is likely to swing both ways, expect a closely-fought three-setter between the two seeds.
