Lorenzo Sonego will be aiming to bounce back from a shock early loss in Marrakesh in front of a pro-Italian crowd in Monte Carlo. 

The 29-year-old, a former quarter-finalist in The Principality, was surprisingly beaten by Vit Kopriva in a topsy-turvy first outing on clay this year. 

He faces another tricky clash in a first ever showdown against Pedro Martinez, who has already picked up some strong results on the dirt this year with a run to the final in Buenos Aires and a quarter-final in Bucharest more recently. 

It’s another tasty first round match that could go either way and it may well go the distance, particularly with Sonego’s propensity for dipping in and out of purple patches.
