Lorenzo Musetti moved into the round of 16 of the Miami Open for the second year in succession after recovering from a set down against 18th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Italian now faces Novak Djokovic for the ninth time in his career, although he has only won one of the previous eight meetings between the pair – on the clay courts of Monte-Carlo in 2023.
A six-time champion at the Miami Open, Djokovic hasn’t lifted the trophy since 2016, although he has only entered twice since then. He began his hunt for a seventh success with a straight-sets win over Rinky Hijikata – 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) – before an almost identical triumph over Camilo Ugo Carabelli – 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).
With a number of seeds having been eliminated from the tournament, Djokovic has now been installed as the favourite to go all the way by most bookies, although the Serb hasn’t won an event since Olympic glory last summer.
After an unusually barren spell in Djokovic’s glittering career, he looks in determined mood this week to add another trophy to his cabinet. When he’s in this kind of mood, there are few who can stop him so we’re backing the Serb to record another straight-sets win.
