Liverpool have lacked the control they had in the first-half of the campaign but can now fairly be described as the champions-elect ahead of a meeting to be played twice in the next few month.

Liverpool Preview: A win of champions

At the weekend, Arne Slot’s red machine went away to defending English champions Manchester City and defeated Pep Guardiola’s side by two goals to nil with first-half strikes from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai.

That was just their third clean sheet in their last ten matches across all competitions, highlighting that the control they showed in the first-half of the campaign isn’t quite there, but they have remained difficult to beat with just one loss in 27 matches so far this season.

Newcastle Preview: An entertaining victory

Newcastle United come into this one on the back of a thrilling 4-3 victory over Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park the other day. The Magpies went 1-0 down early on before then leading 4-1 at half-time but had to cling on as Forest fought back in the second-half of the match.

The visitors begin the midweek round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top five and the probable UEFA Champions League spots in the Premier League. However, their form has also been shaky since ensuring they would face Liverpool in next month’s EFL Cup final at Wembley.

Liverpool Team News: Bradley out

In his pre-match press conference, Liverpool boss has confirmed that Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley will be sidelined for 'a few weeks' due to injury alongside both Joe Gomez and Tyler Morton. Alexis Mac Allister suffered a black eye against City but is available.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Jones; Jota

Unavailable: Gomez (Injured), Bradley (Injured), Morton (Injured)

Questionable:

Newcastle Team News: Botman racing back

Both Sven Botman and Joelinton have recently been injured but are racing to get back to full fitness. The former is more likely to play than the latter, whilst Sandro Tonali is expected to be fully fit having been a substitute due to a hamstring issue at the weekend.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Willock; Murphy, Isak, Gordon

Unavailable: Lascelles (Injured), Joelinton (Injured)

Questionable: Botman (Fitness)

Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction

As mentioned, this clash will be repeated at the national stadium of Wembley next month in the final of the EFL Cup. Liverpool will hope that is the first of potentially three trophies this season with results at the weekend meaning they begin this match day sitting 11 points clear at the top-of-the-table. Newcastle have been very entertaining to watch in the last couple of months with Alexander Isak’s form in particular supreme. Given Liverpool’s aforementioned slight lack of control, Newcastle will fancy their chances of scoring, albeit Liverpool remain favourites at Anfield.
