It would be a huge statement of intent if Liverpool were to beat Man City here and open up an 11-point gap over Pep Guardiola's side, but it is difficult to argue against that eventuality given the respective form of both sides.

Liverpool Preview: Champions-elect?

The bookies have now installed Liverpool as firm favourites for the Premier League title, even at this relatively early stage of the campaign, with the Reds now eight points clear of Sunday's opponents Man City, and victory here would make the points gap seem almost unassailable.

Amidst their excellent domestic form, Arne Slot has also overseen a perfect start to Liverpool's Champions League campaign. Real Madrid were their latest victims on Wednesday, the Reds triumphing 2-0 against the holders at Anfield.

Man City Preview: Sensational slump

Man City's scarcely believable decline in form continued last weekend with a remarkable 0-4 home defeat at the hands of Tottenham, which at the time was their fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions, and third straight in the Premier League.

They looked for all the world to be getting back to winning ways after going three goals up against Feyenoord in Tuesday's Champions League encounter, but fragility plagued them again as they conceded three late goals to the Dutch outfit, resulting in a point apiece.

Liverpool Team News: Konate a big doubt

Slot will hope to have Ibrahima Konate available after the centre-back limped off the pitch after the final whistle against Real Madrid, but Joe Gomez or Jarell Quansah may be needed to deputise if the Frenchman doesn't recover in time.

Conor Bradley, so impressive against Kylian Mbappe on Wednesday, also picked up a knock, so Trent Alexander-Arnold's return to fitness is a timely one.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Jones, Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Nunez, Diaz

Unavailable: Alisson (Injured), Tsimikas (Injured), Chiesa (Injured), Jota (Injured)

Questionable: Konate (Injured), Bradley (Injured), Danns (Injured)

Questionable: Simpson-Pusey (Injured), O'Reilly (Injured), Doku (Injured)

Liverpool vs Man City Prediction

Not for some time has there been a greater disparity between the recent results of these two teams heading into a Premier League meeting between the pair, yet that is where we are following a spectacular crash in Man City's form and confidence of late, combined with Liverpool's continued excellence.

City will need to significantly raise their performance levels to contain the hosts, but that doesn't seem likely given how things have panned out lately. Backing the hosts seems obvious in this one.
