Liverpool Preview: Results first for the Reds

Arne Slot’s Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points at the weekend as they defeated Brentford by two goals to nil in a hard-fought encounter at the Gtech Community Stadium that saw Darwin Nunez score a brace in second-half stoppage-time.

They have also been perfect in the UEFA Champions League with six wins from six matches, defeating both Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid among others. Performances have dipped but Slot is continuing to get results out as they chase a historic quadruple.

Lille Preview: A fascinating UCL campaign

Bruno Genesio replaced Paulo Fonseca in the Lille dugout over the summer and he has continued to play their impressive style of football, albeit they have been frustrated a little due to too many draws in Ligue 1, holding them back from a title race.

In the UEFA Champions League, they have enjoyed famous victories against both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid as they begin the seventh match day of the 2024/25 league phase sitting tucked inside the top eight and the automatic knockout qualification spots.

Liverpool Team News: Darwin Nunez’ return

As mentioned, Darwin Nunez returned from suspension at the weekend to score a brace for Liverpool and he may well have earned himself a start for this week. Diogo Jota missed that game due to a niggle picked up last week and he remains a doubt for this one.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Jones, Diaz; Nunez

Unavailable: Gomez (Injured)

Questionable: Jota (Injured)

Lille Team News: Key injuries

Lille are dealing with a few key injury doubts in attack as Matias Fernandez-Pardo deals with an ankle issue, whilst Kosovo international attacking midfielder Edon Zhegrova, heavily linked with  a move to Napoli, is a doubt due to a groin issue this week.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Chevalier; Meunier, Diakite, Alexsandro, Ismaily; Andre, Bouaddi; Bakker, Cabella, Sahraoui; David

Unavailable: Santos (Injured), Bentaleb (Illness), Mbappe (Injured)

Questionable: Fernandez-Pardo (Injured), Zhegrova (Injured)

Key Stats

  • The only previous UEFA club competition meetings between these two teams were in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 16. A 1-0 home win for Lille was followed by a 3-0 victory for Liverpool that saw the English team progress to the quarter-finals.
  • Liverpool have won their last four UEFA club competition matches at home against French teams and have been victorious in 13 of their 16 home UEFA matches against French visitors overall (D1 L2).
  • Liverpool are the only team to have won all six games in this season's league phase of the UEFA Champions League. A win in this fixture would equal their best sequence of successive wins in European Cup/UEFA Champions League history (all rounds) which they recorded when they won their first seven matches in the 2021/22 campaign.
  • Liverpool have not conceded a goal in their last five UEFA Champions League matches. They have never recorded six successive clean sheets in European Cup/UEFA Champions League history (all rounds).
  • Liverpool have won 17 of their last 18 UEFA Champions League group/league phase matches (L1).
  • Liverpool are aiming to win an 12th successive UEFA Champions League group/league phase match.
  • Liverpool have lost only one of their last 22 UEFA Champions League group/league phase matches at home (W18 D3).
  • None of Liverpool’s last 37 UEFA competition matches finished without a goal being scored. Their last 0-0 was at home against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals in April 2021.
  • Liverpool have won 11 and drawn two of their last 13 matches at home in all competitions, since a 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest in the league on 14 September 2024.
  • Liverpool’s last seven goals in the UEFA Champions League were scored in the second half.
  • On Matchday 6 against Girona, Mohamed Salah became the first African player to reach 50 goals in European Cup/UEFA Champions League history (inc qualifying).
  • Liverpool have lost only one of their last 28 matches in all competitions (W22 D5).
  • Mohamed Salah needs one goal to reach the total of 50 UEFA club competition goals scored for Liverpool. He would become the first player to reach the landmark for Liverpool.
  • Lille have lost their last six UEFA competition matches away from home against English teams. A 2-0 victory at Aston Villa in the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-final second leg is Lille's only success in their nine games away to English clubs (D1 L7).
  • Lille are unbeaten in their last five UEFA Champions League matches (W4 D1). This is their longest unbeaten sequence in the UEFA Champions League proper.
  • Lille have lost only one of their last 16 UEFA club competition group/league matches (W11 D4).
  • Only one of Lille’s last 27 UEFA club competition matches finished without a goal being scored.
  • Lille were winning at half-time in their last three UEFA Champions League matches.
  • Jonathan David is the all-time top scorer from Canada in the UEFA Champions League proper with seven goals. He has scored four goals in his six appearances in the UEFA Champions League proper this season, one short of the record in a single campaign by a Canadian player which was set by Tomasz Radzinski (five in 2000/01).
  • Lille are unbeaten in their last 21 matches in all competitions (W11 D10) since the Matchday 1 defeat at Sporting CP.

Liverpool vs Lille Prediction

Liverpool could rotate a fair bit at Anfield with the Reds having already more or less eased their way through to the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. That means the intensity may well not be there and it could be a game in which things are fairly even for quite a while with Lille playing an easy on the eye but often ineffective style of football to a low-scoring home win would appear a good value bet for this one.
