Learner Tien’s meteoric rise has been ever so slightly stunted of late as he’s struggled to make an impact on clay. 

The American’s lack of top tier experience on the surface has been exposed with routine defeats to Alex Michelsen and Tallin Griekspoor in Houston and Munich respectively. 

Now the 19-year-old meets a fellow American 12 years his senior and with plenty of match play on clay, but not the best of records. 

Indeed, it is statistically Giron’s worst surface and although he has reached the third round at the French Open on two occasions, he’s not made much impact on the dirt in 2025. 

It could be the ideal opponent for Tien to make the breakthrough with his first tour level success on clay, and the faster conditions could well be favourable for his explosive game.
