Learner Tien put in an outstanding display on Friday to beat favourite Arthur Fils and the young American will be flying with confidence after that victory. After being overwhelmed by Joao Fonseca on Thursday and paying the price for a slow start, he was quick out of the traps on Friday and caught Fils cold. The Frenchman had no answer for his aggression and Tien ran out the winner in the four sets.
He now faces another incredibly tough test in Alex Michelsen. The group stage could not have gone any better for Michelsen as he won all three matches and he earned a walkover win against Juncheng Shang on Friday after the Chinese starlet had to withdraw at 1-1 in the second set after losing the first. Michelsen was on course for another win but he will benefit from not having to exert himself that much on Friday so he will come into the semi-finals fresh and ready to go.
That could very well give Michelsen quite an advantage here. He has been looking sharp all week and he comes into this semi-final in good shape. Tien will be confident but any drop off will be punished. We favour Michelsen to maintain his best level the longest and even if he drops a set, he should progress to the final.
