Las Palmas Preview: The spell of Diego Martinez

After the departure of Garcia Pimienta to Sevilla over the summer, Luis Carrion, his successor, struggled in the opening few months of this campaign and were winless until former Granada coach Diego Martinez took charge and he has propelled them out of the bottom three and the relegation places with a very impressive run of form.

In midweek, they defeated Europa by two goals to one in the second round of the Copa del Rey thanks to a match-winning brace from Scotland international Oli McBurnie. That followed a 2-1 win in Catalonia against league leaders Barcelona and the hosts have now won six and lost two of Diego Martinez’ eight matches in charge across all competitions.

Real Valladolid Preview: Paulo Pezzolano out

Even in gaining promotion back to the top-flight, Real Valladolid supporters were unhappy with Uruguayan coach Paulo Pezzolano but owner and president, Ronaldo, stuck with the manager. He has now took the decision, amid rumours he himself may depart for a role within the Brazilian football federation, to part company with him as they struggle in La Liga.

Valladolid head into the weekend without a manager at the time of writing as they sit rock-bottom in Spain’s top-flight as the only side yet to reach double figures for points with just two victories in their opening 15 matches. Paulo Pezzolano’s final game saw Valladolid thrashed 5-0 by Atletico Madrid last weekend before an extra-time win over Real Avila in the Copa del Rey.

Las Palmas Team News: Couple of doubts

Las Palmas have been ignited under Diego Martinez with some key men finding their feet in the 4-2-3-1 system such as Kirian Rodriguez, Fabio Silva and Sandro Ramirez.

They are still dealing with a couple of injury issues in defence as Alex Munoz is a doubt for this one alongside former Ajax utility man Daley Sinkgraven as they welcome Valladolid.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Cillessen; Viti, Alex Suarez, McKenna, Mika Marmol; Kirian Rodriguez, Jose Campana; Sandro, Javier Munoz, Alberto Moleiro; Silva

Unavailable:

Questionable: Alex Munoz (Injured), Sinkgraven (Injured)

Real Valladolid Team News: Probable changes

At the start of this season, one of the main criticisms of Paulo Pezzolano was his decision to heavily rotate and they struggled to gel at all with players being chopped and changed.

There are expected to, as ever with a change in the dugout, be a few more changes for this week with Morocco international Selim Amallah still a likely absentee for this weekend.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Hein; Lucas Perez, Juma Bah, Cumart, Rosa; Kike Perez, Mario Martin; Ivan Sanchez, Marcos Andre, Darwin Machis; Juanmi Latasa

Unavailable:

Questionable: Amallah (Injured)

Las Palmas vs Real Valladolid Prediction

Las Palmas have always had the foundations of an attacking and entertaining team, as was the case for much of last season when they finished comfortably in mid-table despite a massive drop off before the end of the campaign. Valladolid are manager-less and generally rudderless, looking a bit out of their depth with an importance now placed on experienced attackers such as Darwin Machis and Marcos Andre. Las Palmas, especially with their home advantage, should get themselves another victory here at Estadio Gran Canaria.
