Kelvin Gastelum vs Joe Pyfer Prediction
There may have been signs that Kelvin Gastelum is starting to slow down but the veteran comes into this fight at UFC on ESPN 64 determined to prove he still has gas in the tank. He has lost six of his last nine fights in the UFC but those losses have come against top quality opponents. The big question at this stage of his career is whether he still has the hunger especially when he is involved in lower-profile fights.
He has been handed a tough fight on this card as he comes up against the dangerous Joe Pyfer. The 28-year-old has won four of his five fights since joining the UFC have three of those victories have seen him pick up the performance of the night bonus. 12 of his 13 wins have come by stoppage and as he showed last time out at UFC 303 when he knocked out Marc-Andre Barriault, he possesses some serious knockout power.
Gastelum is more than capable of springing the upset here but one feels like he will have to wrestle his way to a decision victory. Pyfer will be looking for the knockout win but he meets Gastelum who has never been knocked out in 29 professional MMA bouts.
We struggle to see Gastelum being stopped in this fight as despite his advancing years, he remains incredibly tough. Pyfer could very well be frustrated in this one and if Gastelum has prepared adequately, we would not rule out the shock win for the veteran. We expect this to go the distance, but we are not completely confident that Gastelum will have prepared properly to grab the win.
Prediction: Fight to go the distance
