Jonathan Martinez: 30-year-old looks to bounce back from Aldo loss at UFC 301
Jonathan Martinez (19-5) it's coming off a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Jose Aldo at UFC 301 and the 30-year-old will be desperate to bounce back. Prior to that loss he was on a six-fight win streak and put in two Performance of the Night displays in beating Cub Swanson and Adrian Yanez. During that run, he also registered a unanimous decision victory over Said Nurmagomedov and he has beaten some quality opponents. He now looks to get back to winning ways but faces a tough test against Marcus McGhee.
Marcus McGhee: The Maniac on five-fight win streak
Marcus McGhee (9-1) Is something of a late bloomer on the 34-year-old is on an impressive five fight win streak coming into this fight at UFC 309. He earned his shot in the UFC and made his debut in April 2023 and hit the ground running. He has stopped all three of his opponents in the Octagon so far and it was his victory against Gaston Bolanos last time out that really made people step up and pay attention. A win here would really be a statement of his credentials in the bantamweight division.
Jonathan Martinez vs Marcus McGhee Prediction
This fight may not possess the big names that so many other bouts on this card contain, but do not sleep on this one. Jonathan Martinez and Marcus McGhee are two high-calibre bantamweights and this promises to be a highly entertaining fight.
McGhee has had no troubles in stepping up against higher quality opponents during his rise in the UFC. He is equally dangerous in his stand up or on the ground and will look for the stoppage right from the start.
Martinez is a little more composed and refined in his approach but has proven to be equally as effective. It will be interesting to see if he can cope with The Maniac and his intensity.
We just favour McGhee in this one and fancy his chances of overwhelming Martinez over the three rounds. There is very little between the two fighters however and it really is one which could go either way.
Prediction: Marcus McGhee to win
