Joao Fonseca comes into the second round full of confidence after stunning Andrey Rublev in straight sets. The young Brazilian made the tennis world sit up and take notice in the Next Gen Finals in December that he was the real deal and he backed that up with a sensational display to shock Rublev.

The 7-6 6-3 7-6 win was no fluke and all the stats were in Fonseca’s favour. He generated ten break points and only converted two so it could arguably have been more comprehensive that it eventually was.

He now meets Italian 29-year-old Lorenzo Sonego who comes off a solid win over veteran Stan Wawrinka in four sets. There was little between the two players but Sonego just had the edge in key moments.

These two players have met once before in Bucharest last year on clay. Fonseca won that match 7-6 7-5.

The young Brazilian will fancy his chances of repeating that here and we would not back against him. his confidence is high, he is playing with great momentum and we expect him to continue this fine run and progress to the third round.
