Jenson Brooksby pulled off another great escape to earn a shot at lifting his first ATP Tour title.
The world number 507 saved match point for the third tie of his Houston run to edge past top seed Tommy Paul by a 7-6 3-6 7-6 scoreline.
The 24-year-old swatted away a match point in qualifying and then survived three in the round of 16 before doing it again at the expense of the world number 13 to win the final set tie-break 8-6.
The qualifier will now look to complete the fairytale run when he features in his fourth ATP Tour final and his first in three years against Frances Tiafoe.
Big Foe took down fourth seed Brandon Nakashima 6-4 7-6 to reach his third straight final in Houston.
The second seed handled the rain and windy conditions to set up a third match against Brooksby in their head-to-head rivalry.
Surprisingly, Tiafoe has lost both previous matches without winning a set. The match-up clearly doesn’t suit him on an outdoor hard court, but it remains to be seen how it works out on the clay.
Brooksby will feel somewhat indestructible given the match points saved so far, while Tiafoe’s record on the Houston dirt suggests he’s a tough nut to crack on this surface.
It could go either way, but we lean towards Brooksby given their previous history and the nature of his charge to the final.
