Jannik Sinner vs Alexander Zverev Prediction
Jannik Sinner came through a potentially tricky semi-final on Friday to beat American talent Ben Shelton and make it through to another Australian Open final as he looks to defend his title.
The first set saw both players break each other a couple of times as neither player settled that well but Sinner won the tiebreak and that seemingly broke Shelton’s resolve as he eased to victory.
Sinner has looked incredibly good this fortnight and despite struggling with illness in his win over Holger Rune, he has looked completely comfortably against all opponents faced so far.
He meets Sascha Zverev who makes it to his third Grand Slam final and he will be looking to win his first. He progressed to the final after Novak Djokovic was forced to retire after losing the first set on a tiebreak.
Playing just the one set will see Zverev come into this final fresh and he came through two tough four-setters against Ugo Humbert and Tommy Paul so he will be finely tuned. He started a little slow against an under-par Djokovic in the semi and he will want to avoid that here however.
Zverev has lost both of his previous Grand Slam finals to Dominic Thiem in the US Open 2020 final and Carlos Alcaraz in the French last year. Both losses came in five sets and for all that heartbreak, it does feel like a matter of time until the big German wins one.
Overcoming Jannik Sinner will not be easy however. The world number one has looked pretty unbeatable in the back end of 2024 and early this year.
Zverev can take heart from the head-to-head as he has won four of their six meetings. Sinner won the last one last year in Cincinnati but Zverev won the four before that including two in the US Open.
We find it difficult to go against Sinner here but the value does lie in Zverev. The German is playing well and primed for this final. It could easily be another long match and we can see this going four sets, potentially even five. That is our preferred play here while we have a marginal preference for the value on Zverev.
Jannik Sinner vs Alexander Zverev Tip: Over 3.5 sets
