19-year-old Czech starlet Jakub Mensik continues to go from strength to strength as he finds himself in the third round in Melbourne.
After battling past Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round, he was handed a tough test next up against sixth-seed Casper Ruud. He produced an outstanding performance blasting 22 aces and creating an impressive 16 break points on the way to a 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4 win to earn his spot in the third round.
That win will give him a huge morale boost as he now faces Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The 25-year-old beat his seeded opponent in the second round as he showed great character in coming from two sets down to beat 29th-seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in five.
This is the first time Davidovich Fokina has gone past the second round in his sixth appearance in Melbourne and he will be keen that it does not end here.
The two players have met twice before and those both came last year. Mensik won the first in Doha and then was forced to retire in the second match in Dubai handing the Spaniard the win.
Mensik has started the season in impressive fashion and looked good in Auckland last week also. He has momentum on his side and is playing at a really high level and he has to be favoured to go through here.
