Jacob Fearnley vs Tomas Machac prediction
Qualifier Jacob Fearnley will face another tough challenge when he meets Czech star Tomas Machac at the Caja Magica.
The Scot won his first main draw match on clay at a Masters 1000 tournament when he saw off Bu Yunchaokete 6-3 7-6, but will be well aware that the 19th seed, Machac should provide a much sterner test.
Fearnley will be a clear underdog but will also be content with his current form, winning three matches in Madrid from qualifying through to this stage and dropping just one set.
The British number two is projected to rise to a new career high even if he loses this maiden encounter with the Czech, giving him the opportunity to swing freely and give it a real go.
Machac could be vulnerable too as he’s only played two matches on clay this season and his record in the Spanish capital also lacks experience with one win and one loss from his debut last year.
Fearnley’s relentless rise up the rankings over the past year makes him a tricky challenge for his opponents to gauge and he could be worth taking a chance on as the underdog in this contest with Machac not such a safe bet as the favourite.
