Tommy Paul won a tussle of fluctuating momentum against Karen Khachanov to reach the round of 16 in Madrid for the first time. 

The American claimed a 6-3 3-6 6-2 victory over the Russian and will now face fifth seed Jack Draper. 

The British number one edged a tight first-set in a tie-break before opponent Matteo Berrettini retired from their third round match. 

It sets up a sixth showdown between Draper and Paul with the Englishman currently 3-2 up in the match-up. 

The American has won two of the last three, but this will be their first encounter on clay and Draper is currently a player on a steep upward trajectory. 

The Brit continues to impress on whatever surface he takes to at present and although Paul has a 29-15 winning record against lefties, it’s less impressive against top ten opponents (12-25).
