THE TEAM NEWS

WINNIPEG JETS

  • The Jets had a solid campaign during the regular season since they ended in fourth place of the Western Conference with 99 points, just two points away of a second-place berth. However, they couldn’t back that up in the postseason and suffered a first-round loss against champions to-be St. Louis Blues (2-4).

  • RW Blake Wheeler was by far Winnipeg’s most productive player since he finished the 2018-19 season with 91 points, thanks to 20 goals and 71 assists. C Mark Scheifele ranked second in points with 84 but led the club in goals with 38. LW Kyle Connor was a steady contributor thanks to his 34 goals and 32 assists.
  • The Jets didn’t do much in the free agent market and re-signed three of their free agents to one-year deals: D Nelson Nogier, D Nathan Beaulieu and D Cameron Schilling. They also added C Mark Letestu on a one-year contract.

NEW YORK RANGERS

  • The Rangers couldn’t make the playoffs during the 2018-19 season and ended in a disappointing 12th place in the Eastern Conference with 78 points. However, things could have been different if things had gone their way in some of the 23 of their games decided in overtime – the second-highest total in the Eastern Conference.

  • Only two Rangers players in the entire roster topped the 50-point plateau, C Mika Zibanejad had 74 points and paced the club on both goals (30) and assists (44) while LW Chris Kreider delivered 52 points (28 goals, 24 assists).
  • Many consider the Rangers to be the biggest winners in the free agency period after acquiring Artemi Panarin, who spent last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets and scored 87 points, on a seven-year, $81.5 million deal. They also signed forwards Greg McKegg, Phillip Di Giuseppe and Danny O’Regan, but Panarin will be the centrepiece when he steps onto the ice.

THE PREDICTION

The Jets look like the better team on paper based on what they produced during the 2018-19 season but the Rangers open the campaign at home, buzzing with excitement over the acquisition of a star free agent such as Artemi Panarin. The Rangers can win this one, although the margin will probably be quite tight.
