THE TEAM NEWS
TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
- Toronto enter this game on a three-game winning streak after Saturday’s 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks and have gone 4-1 in their last five contests. The Maple Leafs are in the midst of a playoff race in the Eastern Conference and currently sit in seventh place of the standings with 78 points.
- Few teams in the NHL are as depleted as the Maple Leafs right now with Cody Ceci listed as questionable and six other players ruled out, including Morgan Rielly, Jake Muzzin, Ilya Mikheyev, David Clarkson, Nathan Horton and Andreas Johnsson.
- Auston Matthews remains unstoppable and the star center is set to make the 2019-20 the best season of his young career. Matthews already has 45 goals this season and has already posted a career-high 77 points (45 goals, 32 assists) as a 22-year-old two-way pivot.
SAN JOSE SHARKS
- The Sharks have virtually no chance to reach the playoffs and currently sit in 13th place of the Western Conference standings with 60 points. They seem to be on the rise, however, as their 5-0 surprising win over the Pittsburgh Penguins pushed their winning streak to two games.
- San Jose are listing Melker Karlsson, Jacob Middleton and Dalton Prout as questionable ahead of this match, and all three players will be game-time decisions. Erik Karlsson and Tomas Hertl have both been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
- Timo Meier has been San Jose’s best player this season, and he currently leads the franchise with 43 points in 65 appearances. The 23-year-old right winger already has 21 goals and 22 assists during the current 2019-20 campaign.
THE PREDICTION
The Sharks are coming off one of their best performances of the season following their dominant win over the Penguins but it’s safe to say they haven’t been playing at a high level throughout most of the season. The Maple Leafs have been slightly inconsistent but they have won three straight contests and also feature one of the best attacking units in the league with 233 goals scored – the highest mark in the entire NHL. That kind of firepower should be enough to consider Toronto as favourites ahead of this contest.
