THE TEAM NEWS

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

  • The Maple Leafs suffered a 5-3 loss to the Florida Panthers the last time out and that loss ended their impressive three-game winning run. They are 3-2 in their last five outings, however, and tied for eighth place with both the Panthers and the Carolina Hurricanes. All three have 63 points, but Toronto have played the most games of those three franchises (53) while earning the most losses (25).
  • Goaltender Fredrik Andersen has been listed as questionable ahead of this contest with an upper body injury, and his status should be revealed closer to the start of the game. Forwards David Clarkson, Nathan Horton and llya Mikheyev are all ruled out, and the same goes for defenceman Morgan Rielly.
  • Auston Matthews bagged a goal against the Panthers, and he continues to be one of the league’s elite scoring threats. That was his 37th goal in 53 games, matching his total from the entire 2018-19 season when he featured in 68 games. He is also close to matching his career-high 73-point output he set in 2018-19.

NEW YORK RANGERS

  • New York are coming off a 5-3 home loss against the Dallas Stars and that result snapped their two-game winning run. The Rangers are 2-3 over their last five games and sit in 12th place of the Eastern Conference with 54 points.
  • The Rangers are close to full strength ahead of this contest, with their lone potential absentee left winger Chris Kreider who missed Monday’s contest against the Dallas Stars with an upper body injury.
  • Artemi Panarin has been New York’s best player this season, but Mika Zibanejad has been scorching hot of late. Even though he didn’t rack up points against the Stars, he has eight points in his last six outings (three goals and five assists) and is up to 20 goals this season.

THE PREDICTION

The Maple Leafs and the Rangers are both coming off losses in their previous contest but the Canada-based franchise has been far better and more consistent during the entire season, as evidenced by the fact they are just one point away from getting into playoff zone. The Maple Leafs have dropped three of their last five games against the Rangers, but they secured a 6-3 win in their most recent trip to Madison Square Garden. The Rangers are healthier, but the Maple Leafs own an impressive attack that has already netted 191 goals – the second-highest tally in the Eastern Conference and they should be able to win here.
