THE TEAM NEWS
NEW YORK ISLANDERS
- The Islanders are trending in the wrong direction after their 2-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes pushed their losing streak to six games. New York have gone 2-8 in their last 10 games, and they have fallen to eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings with 79 points.
- Cal Clutterbuck has been listed as a game-time decision for undisclosed reasons. Johnny Boychuk, Casey Cizikas and Adam Pelech have already been ruled out, and the latter will miss the remainder of the season with an Achilles injury.
- Mathew Barzal remains New York’s most influential player and while he has held been pointless in the previous outing, he has been productive of late. Barzal has racked up 11 points (one goal, 10 assists) in his last nine outings.
VANCOUVER CANUCKS
- The Canucks are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets and that result quickly made fans forget about their previous win against Colorado. Vancouver have lost four of their last five games and also sit in eighth place in the Conference (West) with 76 points. The remaining games will be decisive for their playoff hopes.
- Vancouver list three players as questionable ahead of this game as Jay Beagle, Brock Boeser and Jakob Markstrom are all day-to-day. Josh Leivo will return in early April, while Micheal Ferland has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
- Keep an eye on Elias Petterson here, as he scored Vancouver’s lone goal against the Blue Jackets, and the Swedish center has two goals and three assists during his last three outings. He is up to 65 points (27 goals, 38 assists) in 67 games in 2019-20.
THE PREDICTION
The Islanders’ playoff chances are hanging by a rope following their six-game losing streak, while the Canucks enter this game having dropped four of their last five contests. Both teams are sitting in eighth place in their respective conferences but the Canucks have a few things going their way here. They own a better attack and are playing at home, and that should be enough for them to defeat a New York team that has allowed 4.0 goals per game in their six-game losing streak.
