TSZ TIPS

TSZ TIP TO WIN

  • It is hard to look much further than Xander Schauffele ahead of The Open this week. The American is enjoying the best year of his storied career. He already has a Major under his belt in 2024 having won the PGA but there’s more to it than just that one Major. He came incredibly close in the Players and the Wells Fargo being pipped to both by Scheffler and McIlroy respectively.
  • Top-20 finishes in his last ten events, seventh in the US Open last month, and then a really strong showing at the Scottish Open last week sees him prepare perfectly for a real run at the Claret Jug here.

THE NEXT BEST

  • There is a lot to like about Collin Morikawa this week and he already has one Open title to his name after winning in 2021 on his tournament debut. He has been competing at the business end on Sundays all season in all the major tournaments and it feels like a matter of time before he picks up another Major. His iron play is as good as anybody’s and Morikawa could very well be pushing all the way this Sunday afternoon.
  • One that will go under the radar this weekend is Tony Finau. He has a solid record at The Open and I like his experience for a tournament that will test the players psychologically. Finau will not be phased by what he has to deal with at Troon and an each-way punt is worth considering.

OUTSIDER TO CONSIDER

  • Englishman Aaron Rai is playing the best golf of his career right now and odds of 66/1 make him very tempting as an each-way option. He has a good track record at Links courses and ended the Scottish Open in style last weekend. He can keep it going with a top ten finish here.

ONES TO AVOID

  • He comes into this event with reasonable form and there is plenty of chat around Ludvig Aberg being the next big thing. However, there’s just too many moments within a round where his concentration can drop and that will be punished at Troon. We are staying clear of Aberg this time around.
  • 30/1 looks ridiculously good odds for Jon Rahm and after the success Spain have had in multiple major sports recently, it is understandable why many may take a punt on Rahm. Do not be fooled however. Rahm has not impressed since his move to LIV and unlike DeChambeau who clearly has the edge in his character to upset the PGA stars, Rahm does not.
  • Rob McIntyre was superb in winning the Scottish Open last weekend but it is hard to see the likeable Scot going back-to-back here. He openly admitted his celebrations were memorable (or not as is more likely!) and that will surely impact him and see a drop in mood at Troon.
  • Rory McIlroy is playing as well as anybody right now and it really does appear to be a matter of time until he wins a Major again. The only thing stopping him in the psychological side of things although that would be a concern at Troon more than most venues. His ability to birdie is arguably better than anybody, but he is prone to bogeys and that could leave him vulnerable on this tough terrain. We are leaving Rory this week.
