Girona Preview: Predictably difficult season

Girona have been entertaining to watch in each of their six seasons as a La Liga club but after finishing third and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League last season, the Catalans have massively declined this year and are getting dragged down towards the relegation battle.

The home team come into this one on the back of a 4-1 demolition at the hands of Catalan rivals Barcelona at Estadi Olympic Lluis Companys in their most recent outing last weekend, extending their winless run of form in La Liga to seven matches.

Alaves Preview: Bizarre decision-making

In early December, mid-table Alaves took the bizarre decision to sack Luis Garcia Plaza, who had, for some reason, been under intense pressure in charge of the Basque side, and replace him with former Celta Vigo boss Eduardo Coudet.

Eduardo Coudet is now under immense pressure himself as they sit just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places on goal difference. The visitors most recently suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Rayo Vallecano last weekend.

Girona Team News: Several key issues

Girona are dealing with several key issues for this one with Netherlands international midfielder Donny van de Beek remaining sidelined due to suspension, whilst key attackers such as Bryan Gil, Abel Ruiz and Bojan Miovski are all missing through injury.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Paulo Gazzaniga; Alejandro Frances, Blind, Krejci, Miguel Gutierrez; Arnau Martinez, Arthur, Yangel Herrera, Yaser Asprilla; Tsygankov, Danjuma

Unavailable: Ricard Artero (Injured), Ivan Martin (Injured), Van de Beek (Suspended), Abel Ruiz (Injured), Bryan Gil (Injured), Miovski (Injured)

Alaves Team News: Fully fit

Something that is quite a rarity for a club in one of Europe’s major leagues, Alaves have a fully fit and available squad for this weekend so they will be able to name an unchanged eleven if they so choose for this one.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Antonio Sivera; Tenaglia, Abqar, Santiago Mourino, Manu Sanchez; Joan Jordan, Antonio Blanco; Pau Cabanes, Jon Guridi, Carles Alena; Kike

Girona vs Alaves Prediction

Girona have struggled throughout the campaign and that was always the expectation after Michel said due to the amount of key players that were sold last summer, such as Savio and Artem Dovbyk as well as Aleix Garcia. Alaves, on the other hand, appeared to be a steady and settled side under their previous manager and now find themselves seemingly destined for the drop. This could be a bit of a slog and both teams scoring may well be a good bet as both sides sense a major opportunity to earn three points.
