Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard will continue his search for a first win on clay this year against Mariano Navone in Madrid.

The Frenchman has yet to back up his excellent 2024, with an undercooked 3-6 record this season, including back-to-back defeats in Monte Carlo and Barcelona to Jordan Thompson and qualifier Hamad Medjedovic respectively. 

The world number 34, who won the title in Lyon last year and is making his debut in Madrid, comes up against a tricky clay-court specialist in Navone with the Argentine Spending the majority of the current campaign on the dirt. 

This will be their first meeting on tour, although Mpetshi Perricard did win a qualifier on clay at a Lima 2 event three years ago. 

The chance of an upset are certainly there for the South American world number 70, who reached the second round here last year, but it remains a tough call with both players struggling to find their best form. 

A punt on it going the distance may be the best option, although Mpetshi Perricard’S power and strength could be pivotal if he finds consistency and rhythm and keeps the unforced error count down.
