Genoa Preview: Vieira’s Genoa

Over the November international break, Genoa took the surprise decision to replace Alberto Gilardino with former Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira. Despite surprise and scepticism since that appointment, things have been steady and improved under Vieira.

Genoa come into this one on the back of a goalless draw against Lecce last weekend which was quite representative and emblematic of Vieira’s low-scoring tendencies at Genoa. They have suffered just one defeat in seven matches since his appointment.

Parma Preview: Pecchia’s Parma

Despite offers from elsewhere in Serie A over the summer, Fabio Pecchia took the decision to stay in charge of Parma to implement his attacking and entertaining style of football. Their 19 matches in the league have consisted of 59 goals thus far.

The visitors most recently shared a goalless draw with Torino in Piedmont last weekend to kick off their 2025. They went into the New Year on the back of a dramatically late 2-1 defeat of struggling Monza at the Ennio Tardini.

Genoa Team News: Attacking issues

Following the sales of Albert Gudmundsson and Mateo Retegui over the summer, Genoa have several injury issues in attack as well with the likes of Ruslan Malinovskiy, Vitinha, Caleb Ekuban and Junior Messias all issues for the hosts.

Predicted XI (4-1-4-1): Leali; De Winter, Bani, Johan Vasquez, Caricol; Badelj; Bohinen, Thorsby, Frendrup, Miretti; Pinamonti

Unavailable: Norton-Cuffy (Injured), Malinovskiy (Injured), Vitinha (Injured), Ekuban (Injured)

Questionable: Matturro (Injured), Junior Messias (Injured)

Parma Team News: Several injuries

Parma have several injury issues ahead of their trip to the Marasi this weekend with Colombia international centre-back Yordan Osorio remaining sidelined. The likes of Nahuel Estevez and Dennis Man are also injury doubts.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Suzuki; Del Prato, Balogh, Valenti, Valeri; Hainaut, Hernani, Sohm; Almqvist, Mihaila, Cancellieri

Unavailable: Circati (Injured), Yordan Osorio (Injured), Charpentier (Injured), Kowalski (Injured)

Questionable: Nahuel Estevez (Injured), Coulibaly (Injured), Man (Injured), Camara (Injured), Adrian Bernabe (Injured)

Genoa vs Parma Prediction

Genoa have struggled for goals throughout the Patrick Vieira era and that is not necessarily entirely down to the former France captain tweaking his style of football. Genoa, simply, lack the attacking personnel to be consistently potent. They face a Parma side that have been entertaining to watch but they have also been quite inconsistent, too, so it wouldn’t be a bad bet to suggest this may be a low-scoring affair.

Genoa vs Parma Tip: Under 2.5 goals
