Gael Monfils vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard Prediction

Gael Monfils made history in the run-up to the Australian Open by becoming the oldest ever winner of an ATP Singles title when he lifted the ASB Classic trophy, defeating Zizou Bergs in the final in Auckland.

The 38-year-old, a two-time quarter-finalist at the Australian Open, claimed his 13th ATP Singles title in the process, and will be full of confidence heading into a tournament where he has progressed beyond the first round in 16 of his 18 participations.

The huge-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricaud comes into the first Grand Slam of the year with plenty of hype around him after a breakthrough year in 2024 in which he won two ATP titles - at 250 and 500 level - in addition to reaching the last 16 at Wimbledon.

The 6ft 8in Frenchman is something of a throwback and averaged an incredible 19 aces per match last year, comfortably the highest on tour, and reached the semi-finals of the Brisbane International last week ahead of his debut Australian Open appearance.

This is an absolute blockbuster of a first-round clash between two Frenchman at opposite ends of their careers. Perricard promises much while Monfils showed in Auckland that he still has something to give. Assuming he has recovered from his ASB Classic exertions, Monfils is more than capable of taking this the distance should he managed to get a handle on Perricard’s intimidating serve.
