Gael Monfils beat Fabian Marozsan in three sets to reach the second-round of Monte-Carlo, but came unstuck against Andrey Rublev, losing a tight two set match, with the second being on a tiebreak.

Monfils has shone at times this season but still hasn’t made a genuine breakthrough at an event in terms of reaching the last four or better. He is still entertaining as ever, which makes his matchup with Denis Shapovalov, another fine shot maker in his own right, so intriguing.

Shapovalov suffered an early first-round loss in Monte-Carlo to Marcos Giron but on the whole, his form has been pretty good this year with a win at the Dallas Open and a semi-final appearance in Mexico.
