Gabriel Diallo vs Kamil Majchrzak prediction
This certainly isn’t the contest Madrid was expecting.
Kamil Majchrzak is the unlikely figure taking the place of two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz after Spain’s great hope withdrew through injury.
The 29-year-old Pole comes in as a lucky loser having been beaten by Elmer Moller in the final stage of qualifying, but he has shown some decent pedigree on the dirt of late with a Challenger title in the city following a surge to the last four in Marrakesh.
Gabriel Diallo has made the most of a similar situation with the Canadian coming into the first round as a lucky loser and going on to shock Zizou Bergs 6-1 6-2.
The 23-year-old failed to make it through qualifying in Monte Carlo and Barcelona and given this is his first meeting with Majchrzak, it’s hard to pick a clear winner in this one.
Both players are ranked just inside the top 90 and this represents a great opportunity to go deeper in a draw with plenty of points up for grabs.
Majchrzak has more know-how on the clay and his form probably gives him the nod, but Diallo is beginning to make his mark at tour level more often and don’t be surprised if he finds a way to win, especially given how he performed against Bergs.
Gabriel Diallo vs Kamil Majchrzak tip: Over 2.5 sets
