FREIBURG PREVIEW: THINGS CLICKING AGAIN FOR SCHUSTER

Since that shock 0-3 defeat at the hands of lowly St. Pauli, Freiburg have done well to recover from that setback and put together a winning run. Three of their last four in all competitions have ended in victory, including progress in the DFB-Pokal most recently. They sit inside the Bundesliga’s top six heading into this latest round of fixtures.

They made hard work of their cup win over Hamburg in midweek but managed to get the job down after going two goals ahead, before the visitors came back in the second half, cutting the deficit and exerting pressure.

MAINZ PREVIEW: ONLY ONE WIN IN FIVE ACROSS ALL COMPETITIONS

Mainz travel to Freiburg looking to arrest what has been a poor patch of form, winning just one of their last five games in all competitions. Four of those matches came in the Bundesliga, where Mainz have accumulated four points from the last 12 available to them. The other came in the cup, where Bayern Munich dispatched them comfortably.

Not many gave Mainz a chance against Bayern and rightly so. Vincent Kompany’s side dominated throughout, ultimately winning 0-4. Essentially a free hit for Mainz, they can quickly put that result behind them.

FREIBURG TEAM NEWS: MAKENGO A DOUBT

Freiburg are set to have four players missing and possibly five, should defender Jordy Makengo fail to recover in time from a knock. Expect the usual 4-2-3-1 formation from Julian Schuster with Adamu favoured again over Gregoritsch.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Atubolu; Kubler, Ginter, Lienhart, Gunter; Eggestein, Osterhage; Doan, Dinkci, Grifo; Adamu

UNAVAILABLE: Gulde (Injured), Kyereh (Injured), Rohl (Injured), Schmidt (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Makengo (Injured)

MAINZ TEAM NEWS: CHANGE REQUIRED IN ATTACK

With striker Jonathan Burkardt not fit and set to miss out here, Bo Henriksen will be forced into a change at the top end of the pitch. The likelihood is that Bayern Munich loanee Armindo Sieb will be the player entrusted to take Burkardt’s place.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Zentner; Kohr, Bell, Leitsch; Caci, Sano, Amiri, Mwene; Nebel, Sieb, Lee

UNAVAILABLE: Burkardt (Fitness), Hanche-Olsen (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Jenz (Injured), Veratschnig (Injured)

FREIBURG VS MAINZ PREDICTION

Whilst it’s certainly not out the realm of possibility for Mainz to get something here, especially when considering the exploits of St. Pauli. But that was an exception to the norm and more likely is that Freiburg boss the majority of play here on the own patch and wind up coming away with three points. Therefore, the safe move is to back a home victory.
