Frances Tiafoe vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard Prediction
American Frances Tiafoe eased through his opening match against Australian Alexander Walton as he won 7-6 6-3 to progress to the round of 16. Rather than go to Brisbane, Tiafoe played in Hong Kong last year prior to the Australian Open and he will be hoping his switch will benefit him in hitting the ground running. He did not overly start 2024 particularly well, but he will see this as a good opportunity to do so here.
He meets French powerhouse Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard who is coming off a three-set thriller over local favourite Nick Kyrgios. All three sets went to a tiebreak as neither player managed to break the other. It was the 21-year-old Frenchman who edged the final set and he was helped by a stunning total of 36 aces across the three sets.
It will be interesting to see whether Tiafoe can handle that serve that is already looking so good so early in the year. The serve was key in their previous meeting when Mpetshi Perricard won 6-7 7-6 6-3 towards the end of 2024 at the ATP Masters 100 in Paris. That is their only meeting and it will be interesting to see if this match follows suit.
Mpetshi Perricard’s match against Kyrgios will likely have tuned him up nicely for another intense match and that could well just give him the edge here. Tiafoe is not renowned for starting the year overly fast and we like the tall Frenchman’s prospects in this one.
