Frances Tiafoe got through a tight first-round match against Miomir Kecmanovic, winning 6-2 5-7 7-6 (5). It was a quick turnaround for the American, having played in the final of the Houston Open less than two days earlier, but he managed to get it done and now faces Alexei Popyrin in the next round.

Popyrin came from a set down to beat Ugo Humbert 3-6 7-6 6-4 in nearly three hours. The level from the Australian was not the best, with 50 unforced errors in total, but he did show grit and determination to fight back in the tiebreak and eventually find a way through.

These two have never faced each other on clay but did play at the US Open last year, with Tiafoe winning in four sets at the fourth-round stage. Despite the American’s exhaustion levels likely to be a factor, he’s made a really solid start to his clay court campaign, and we think he’s good value to beat Popyrin in straight sets.
