As Fantasy Premier League returned post-international break, it was very much a feast or famine Gameweek 12. Those who captained Erling Haaland (£15.1m) were left bitterly disappointed as the Norwegian spurned a number of early chances and eventually finished with just 2 FPL points as Man City fell to a third consecutive Premier League defeat, losing 0-4 to Spurs. Those who placed the armband on Mo Salah (£13.1m) however, were celebrating his haul of 13 points. The Liverpool star scored twice in the Reds’ 2-3 victory away at Southampton.

With a midweek round of games to come following this weekend, it’s an important Gameweek 13 for all concerned and choosing the right skipper is of paramount importance. We assess the most enticing candidates, both premium and differential ahead of Friday’s 6:30pm deadline.

PREMIUM OPTIONS

Mo Salah (£13.1m) vs MCI (H)

The stage is set for Salah to play a starring role once again at the expense of Pep Guardiola’s side, whom he boasts seven goals and four assists against across 14 Premier League fixtures. His brace vs Southampton made it 16 attacking returns in the league this season and 120 FPL points, by far the most of any fantasy asset.

Salah also boasts a tremendous record when it comes to Sunday home fixtures for Liverpool. In 43 home Sunday starts, the Egyptian has racked up 24 goals and ten assists. When taking into account Man City’s current losing run, it’s hard not to see Salah extending Guardiola’s misery with further attacking returns.

Cole Palmer (£10.9m) vs AVL (H)

Any FPL bosses not wanting to pick Salah will likely turn their attention towards Palmer and for good reason. The Chelsea star blanked last time out against Leicester, but would’ve scored if not for teammate Noni Madueke unintentionally blocking his goal-bound shot on the line. Palmer has now gone three Premier League games without an attacking return and it feels like he’s due a big haul very soon.

The Blues host Aston Villa in Gameweek 13, who have failed to keep a clean sheet across their last five league matches, conceding eight goals in their most recent three top flight games. With Palmer having recorded at least one attacking return in four of Chelsea’s six home fixtures so far, it would be a surprise if Palmer didn’t gain a high FPL score here.

Bukayo Saka (£10.2m) vs WHU (a)

Back in form both domestically and in Europe, Saka is well placed to pick up where he left off in Portugal midweek. Both against Nottingham Forest last weekend and Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday, Saka registered a goal and an assist for Arsenal, who racked up eight goals in total over the course of both games.

With 80 FPL points from 12 gameweeks so far, Saka is well-placed to increase that total substantially in Gameweek 13 as the England international takes on West Ham away with the Gunners, who thrashed the same opponents 0-6 last season at the London Stadium with Saka scoring twice. Definitely an attractive captain pick.

DIFFERENTIAL OPTION

Kaoru Mitoma (£6.4m) vs SOU (H)

Our differential captain pick in Gameweek 12 was a player from Brighton and that paid off big time as Joao Pedro picked up a goal, an assist and 12 FPL points away to Bournemouth. For Gameweek 13, we’re focusing on another Brighton asset, but this time it’s a midfielder in Kaoru Mitoma, who also scored last weekend.

Mitoma’s goal at the Vitality Stadium may have been only his first in the Premier League since Gameweek 1, but the winger has been a regular starter for the Seagulls and no doubt is an attacking outlet capable of racking up large returns before long. Brighton are up against bottom-of-the-table Southampton in Gameweek 13, who have the second worst defence in the top flight, conceding 24 goals across 12 matches. If ever there was a fixture to take a chance on a differential captain, this is it.
