THE KEY STATS
- West Ham have won their last ten UEFA competition matches at home.
- West Ham have won four of their previous six UEFA competition matches at home against German clubs. This includes a 2-0 victory vs Freiburg in this season’s Europa League group stage.
- West Ham have won the second leg in six of their last seven UEFA competition ties (L1).
- West Ham have lost their first leg of a European tie away from home on six previous occasions, but they have overcome that deficit in the second leg in all but one of those. The most recent instance came in the Europa League round of 16 in 2021/22 when they faced Sevilla. They lost the first leg 1-0 in Spain but won the return leg 2-0 at home to record the victory and progress.
- Freiburg have lost only one of their last seven Europa League matches (W5 D1).
- Freiburg have lost the second leg in only two of their previous seven UEFA competition two-legged ties (W3 D2).
- Freiburg have kept four clean sheets in their last six Europa League matches
- Freiburg take a 1-0 lead into the second leg; something they have done on one previous occasion in UEFA club competitions from a home first leg. In the third qualifying round of the Europa League in 2017/18, they beat NK Domžale 1-0 at home, but lost 0-2 in Slovenia as they exited the competition.
THE PREDICTION
These two met twice in the UEFA Europa League group stages earlier this season with West Ham United winning both but Michael Gregoritsch’s late winner last week gave Freiburg a 1-0 victory in Germany in the first-leg of this UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie. David Moyes’ Irons are under pressure, especially after having to fight back to earn a 2-2 draw against a poor Burnley side last weekend. They, though, remain firm favourites for this second-leg and should probably just about get through and into the quarter-finals at the London Stadium.
TIP: WEST HAM TO WIN
