THE KEY STATS

  • Salzburg have won three and drawn one of their last four UEFA club competition matches against Portuguese teams.
  • Salzburg won 3-0 in each of their previous two UEFA club competition matches at home against Portuguese teams (vs Sporting in December 1993 in the UEFA Cup and vs Vitoria in the Europa League group stage in November 2017).
  • Benfica have won one and drawn three of their previous four UEFA club competition matches away from home against Austrian clubs.
  • Benfica are without a win in their last seven Champions League matches. They have never played eight successive European Cup/Champions League matches without a victory.

THE PREDICTION

It has been a truly miserable Champions League campaign for Benfica across the 2023-24 season, losing four of their five Group D fixtures with their only point so far coming against a heavily rotated Inter Milan side most recently. Even that result was bittersweet after last year’s finalists came back from three goals down to draw 3-3 in Lisbon. Salzburg got the better of Benfica by two goals to nil in the reverse fixture and motivation for them is high with home advantage and a place in the Europa League at stake. Back Gerhard Struber’s side to once again get the better of the Portuguese champions.

TIP: SALZBURG TO WIN
