THE LOWDOWN
PSG
It has been far from smooth sailing for PSG in this season’s Champions League with two losses in four Group F fixtures, both coming on the road. Fortunately for the French champions, their form at Parc Des Princes has held up well and two wins from two at home keeps knockout qualification firmly within their control ahead of the final two group matches, starting against the side which dealt them a bloody nose at St. James Park.
PSG returned from the international break and flexed their attacking muscles by blowing away AS Monaco in a ruthless display of attacking efficiency, winning 5-2 and maintaining their spot at the top of Ligue 1. In nine home fixtures this campaign in all competitions, only Nice and Lorient have so far denied Luis Enrique’s side from claiming victory.
NEWCASTLE
Despite losing for the second time to Borussia Dortmund, the open nature of Group F and PSG’s stuttering form means that Newcastle are still right in the mix to finish in the top two, despite currently being sat bottom of the group. A memorable victory in Paris for Eddie Howe’s side would not only complete a sensational double over PSG, but also see them overtake Enrique’s men in the table, leaving knockout qualification in their hands going into the final round of games, which sees them host AC Milan.
The Magpies continue to defy a horrendous injury to pick up positive results, their latest coming at home to Chelsea in the Premier League. A 4-1 victory means that Newcastle across all competitions have now beaten the Blues, Arsenal, Man Utd and Man City at some stage during the 2023-24 campaign. But a win at the Parc Des Princes would certainly down as their biggest individual triumph since the days of Sir Bobby Robson.
THE TEAM NEWS
PSG
PSG will be without a number of key defenders for this game, such as Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes, both of who have hamstring injuries. An achilles problem keeps out centre-back Presnel Kimbempe, whilst young midfield prodigy Warren Zaire-Emery will be missing for the rest of 2023 due to an ankle injury suffered on international duty.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Hakimi, Skriniar, Hernandez, Mukiele; Ruiz, Ugarte, Vitinha; Dembele, Ramos, Mbappe
UNAVAILABLE: Kimpembe (Injured), Marquinhos (Injured), Nuno Mendes (Injured), Zaire-Emery (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
NEWCASTLE
You could argue at this point that Newcastle have more players injured than fully-fit at the moment. As a result of Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock’s absences, not to mention Sandro Tonali’s suspension, 17-year-old Lewis Miley could well be set to make his Champions League debut just three days after his first Premier League start this past Saturday. Both Miguel Almiron and Alexander Isak came through the weekend and should be ready to go again in Paris.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Livramento; Miley, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Gordon
UNAVAILABLE: Botman (Injured), Targett (Injured), Manquillo (Injured), Burn (Injured), Anderson (Injured), Longstaff (Injured), Tonali (Suspended), Murphy (Injured), Barnes (Injured), Willock (Injured), Wilson (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Krafth (Illness)
THE KEY STATS
- PSG have lost only one of their last 35 home matches in the UEFA Champions League group stage (W28 D6).
- Defeat for PSG would see them lose successive matches in the same edition of the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time since the 2004/05 season.
- PSG have not failed to score in their last 48 UEFA Champions League group stage matches, since a 1-0 defeat away from home against Real Madrid in November 2015.
- PSG have lost six of their last eight UEFA Champions League matches against English teams (W2).
- Kylian Mbappe has scored in each of his last seven UEFA Champions League group stage matches at home (10 goals in the 7 matches).
- Newcastle have won three of their last four UEFA club competition matches against French teams (L1).
- Newcastle have won only one of their previous seven UEFA club competition matches away from home against French teams (D2 L4).
- Newcastle have won only one of their last ten UEFA club competition matches away from home (D5 L4).
THE PREDICTION
When factoring in the severity of Newcastle’s injury list, it would take an incredible effort from the Magpies to get something against a club packed with incredible attacking weapons, who over the past few years have racked up nine wins and a draw from their last ten home group stage fixtures in the Champions League. As shown against both AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund on the road, Newcastle are well-drilled, well-disciplined and will not be easy to break down. But the overwhelming firepower of PSG is worth backing to ultimately force their way through the Newcastle backline and over the course of 90 minutes, do enough to ensure that the Parisians come away with the three points.
TIP: PSG TO WIN
