THE LOWDOWN

LAZIO

Lazio have endured a mixed group stage campaign so far, with one win, one draw and one loss from their three matches played so far. One things for sure, they’ll need to significant improve on their showing the reverse fixture vs Feyenoord, which saw the Eredivisie winners beat Maurizio Sarri’s side fairly comprehensively.

The inconsistency of Lazio in the group stage has extended to their Serie A form, having won three and lost two of their most recent five league fixtures. Against an opponent like Feyenoord though, the Lazio backline will need to be on top form with the visitors scoring at least twice in each of their last three group games.

FEYENOORD

Feyenoord moved to the top of Group E following the conclusion of the third round of Champions League group stage fixtures, as they comfortably dispatched Lazio 3-1 with a wonderful attacking showing at De Kuip. The Champions League debut of Santiago Gimenez was well-worth the wait, the free-scoring Mexican forward having missed Feyenoord’s opening two group games through suspension.

Gimenez bagged twice for Arne Slot’s side against Lazio, with Ramiz Zerrouki also getting on the scoresheet, ensuring Feyenoord bounced back from defeat away at Atletico to maintain their 100% home record in the group stage. The only disappointment was them failing to keep a clean sheet after conceding a late penalty.

THE TEAM NEWS

LAZIO

Lazio will check on the fitness of full-back Adam Marusic ahead of this clash with the Montenegrin nursing an ankle problem. Fellow defender Nicolo Casale is still missing, although the Italians are hoping he is not too far away from making a return following a muscle adductor injury. Daichi Kamada didn’t feature in Rotterdam and could be afforded a start this time around.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Provedel; Lazzari, Patric, Romagnoli, Hysaj; Kamada, Rovella, Luis Alberto; Anderson, Immobile, Zaccagni

UNAVAILABLE: Casale (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Marusic (Injured)

FEYENOORD

Midfielder Mats Wieffer missed Feyenoord’s win over RKC Waalwijk at the weekend due to illness, but has travelled with the team to Rome and is expected to feature here with Zerrouki most likely dropping out the starting XI. Centre-back Gernot Trauner has also travelled, although attacking midfielder Yankuba Minteh remains out with a bad hamstring injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Bijlow; Nieuwkoop, Geertruida, Hancko, Hartman; Wieffer, Timber; Paixao, Stengs, Ivanusec; Gimenez

UNAVAILABLE: Minteh (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Trauner (Injured), Wieffer (Illness)

THE PREDICTION

Matches involving Feyenoord in this season’s Champions League are normally full of entertainment and goals, with this contest expected to be no different. Lazio will be looking to use home advantage in their favour and the carrot of being able to overtake their opponents in Group E with victory should ensure an attacking game-plan from Maurizio Sarri. But when taking into account Feyenoord’s offensive potency, not to mention the form of star striker Gimenez, it’s hard not to see the Dutch champions carving out plenty of goalscoring opportunities themselves. With that in mind, back over 2.5 goals scored regardless of the final outcome.

TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS
