THE LOWDOWN

FEYENOORD

Feyenoord return to Rotterdam having won each of their last seven matches at De Kuip in all competitions and now look to gain revenge on Atletico Madrid after having been beaten 3-2 by the Spaniards in a thrilling encounter earlier in the group stage. They boast six points from a possible six on their own patch, but two defeats on the road leaves them trailing both Atletico and Lazio in Group E.

Santiago Gimenez found the net twice in his first home Champions League fixture against Lazio last month and after scoring a hat-trick in the Eredivisie this past weekend, Feyenoord need their star striker to be firing on all cylinders here as he is so important to their offensive play.

ATLETICO MADRID

Atletico Madrid responded emphatically to being held to a draw by Celtic at Parkhead, destroying the same opponents when the two sides reconvened in Spain. Diego Simeone’s side ran riot against a side reduced to ten-men after just 23 minutes. Key to the demolition job was the duo of Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata, who each netted for the third straight Champions League fixture. Both bagged a brace in a 6-0 thrashing, which took Atletico top of Group E.

Simeone’s side have flexed their attacking muscles across this group stage, racking up 12 goals so far, an average of three per game. Only European champions Man City can match that, which is a testament to this team’s offensive qualities. Currently Atletico lead Lazio by one point and Feyenoord by two points with two group fixtures remaining.

THE TEAM NEWS

FEYENOORD

Arne Slot was afforded a huge boost at the weekend by the return of Yankuba Minteh, the winger coming off the bench after having missed Feyenoord’s entire group stage campaign so far due to a hamstring injury. The question now is whether Slot plays him from the start in this crucial encounter, or sticks with Luka Ivanusec on the left-side of attacking midfield. However, hamstring injuries will sideline both Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Bart Nieuwkoop.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Bijlow; Nieuwkoop, Geertruida, Hancko, Hartman; Wieffer, Timber; Paixao, Stengs, Minteh; Gimenez

UNAVAILABLE: Jahanbakhsh (Injured), Nieuwkoop (Injured)

ATLETICO MADRID

Griezmann and Morata serve as a formidable partnership together and the dynamic pair will likely have Rodrigo De Paul behind them following the Argentinian’s return from suspension. Marcos Llorente could miss out as a result, whilst Thomas Lemar won’t feature at all as he is out with an achilles injury.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Oblak; Gimenez, Witsel, Hermoso; Molina, De Paul, Koke, Niguez, Riquelme; Griezmann, Morata

UNAVAILABLE: Lemar (Injured)

THE KEY STATS

  • Feyenoord have won 14 and drawn two of their last 16 UEFA club competition matches at home.
  • Feyenoord have won only one of their last eight UEFA club competition matches against Spanish teams (D1 L6).
  • Feyenoord have only failed to score in one of their last 27 UEFA club competition matches at home.
  • Atletico Madrid have lost only one of their last seven UEFA Champions League group stage matches (W2 D4).
  • Atletico Madrid are without a win in their last six UEFA Champions League matches away from home (D2 L4).
  • Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their last seven UEFA club competition matches against Dutch teams (W5 D2). Since a 3-2 home defeat against Ajax in the Champions League quarter-finals in March 1997.

THE PREDICTION

Feyenoord’s home form across the group stage so far has been perfect and they’ll need to maintain it here to put qualification for the round of 16 back in their hands. However, with just one clean sheet in four group fixtures so far, it’s hard to see them keeping out Griezmann and Morata in full flow even if Atletico do prioritise defensive stability initially. But when taking into account Feyenoord’s highly offensive style of play and how profitable it is at De Kuip, we should be in for a hugely exciting contest with plenty of chances at each end. Regardless of the final outcome, back both teams to score.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
