THE LOWDOWN
BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Borussia Dortmund picked up their first victory in Group F in the third round of group fixtures, beating Newcastle 0-1 away from home. This was an excellent result when considering that the Magpies had beaten French giants PSG 4-1 in the previous round of games. Edin Terzic’s men had to ride out some heavy pressure, but got the job done and moved into second-place in the group.
However, they come into this match under scrutiny and with a reaction demanded by supporters after being thrashed 0-4 on their own patch by long-time rivals Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday. This ended an unbeaten run in all competitions which has stretched to eight matches.
NEWCASTLE
Despite a lengthy injury-list, Newcastle are continuing to show their quality and make their supporters proud. They come into this game on the back of two more memorable victories, first against Man Utd in the Carabao Cup, before ending Arsenal’s unbeaten Premier League season at the weekend, winning 1-0 at St. James’ Park.
As it stands, Eddie Howe’s side are third in Group F and level on points with Dortmund, further emphasising the importance of this fixture. After getting a point at the San Siro against AC Milan, they will believe that three points aren’t out of the equation here if they are more clinical in front of goal.
THE TEAM NEWS
BORUSSIA DORTMUND
It would be no surprise to see a changed starting XI Dortmund following that humbling ‘Der Klassiker’ defeat at the weekend. Felix Nmecha, the goalscorer at St. James Park could come back into the team and Emre Can’s experience in central midfield may also be called upon should he be fit enough to feature. Niclas Fullkrug should keep his place up top.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Kobel; Ryerson, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Bensebaini; Nmecha, Can; Malen, Reus, Brandt; Fullkrug
UNAVAILABLE: Duranville (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Bensebaini (Injured), Can (Injured)
NEWCASTLE
Defender Dan Burn was forced off at half-time with a back injury and the expectation is that he will be out for a number of months. This would likely mean Kieran Trippier moving to the left-hand-side of defence with Tino Livramento taking his place at full-back. Sven Botman, Harvery Barnes and Alexander Isak are all out, whilst Sandro Tonali is suspended.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Pope; Livramento, Lascelles, Schar, Trippier; S. Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Wilson, Gordon
UNAVAILABLE: Burn (Injured), Targett (Injured), Manquillo (Injured), Botman (Injured), Tonali (Suspended), Anderson (Injured), Murphy (Injured), Barnes (Injured), Isak (Injured)

THE PREDICTION
Borussia Dortmund are expected to come out of the traps very quickly and put Newcastle’s backline under heavy early pressure. But the Magpies are brilliantly coached under Eddie Howe are strong enough to soak that up. Isak will be a miss in attack due to his pace on the counter-attack, but the hosts will no doubt be aware of Callum Wilson’s threat and plan accordingly. The stakes are high in this one and neither can afford a loss when considering the margins to qualify for the knockout stage. Therefore, expect a cagey encounter and under 2.5 goals scored.
TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
