THE KEY STATS

  • Atletico Madrid have lost only one of their last eight Champions League group stage matches (W3 D4).
  • A win or draw for Atletico Madrid would see them complete a UCL group campaign unbeaten for the third time. They previously did so in 2008/09 and 2013/14.
  • Atletico Madrid’s total of 15 goals scored in five matches has already equalled their highest total in a UCL group campaign. They scored 15 goals in six matches in 2013/14.
  • Lazio have not failed to score in their last 19 Champions League matches (GS to F). Since a 1-0 defeat at Sparta Praha in December 2003.
  • Lazio have won only one of their last 12 Champions League matches against Spanish teams (D4 L7).
  • Lazio have lost eight of their previous nine UEFA club competition matches away from home against Spanish teams (W1). The exception was a 1-0 victory at Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Cup semi-finals in March 1998.

THE PREDICTION

Both teams have already qualified for the Champions League knockout stage, although three points here for Lazio would see them leapfrog Atletico Madrid and take top spot in Group E. To finish as group winners provides huge motivation for these two sides, so it would be no surprise to see both name full-strength starting XIs. Atletico Madrid have been unstoppable from an attacking perspective across the group stage so far, racking up 15 goals which is the joint-highest of all the clubs remaining in the competition. Such offensive potency along with home advantage being in their favour may just give them the edge against very tough opposition.

TIP: ATLETICO MADRID TO WIN
