THE LOWDOWN

VALENCIA

Prior to the 2023/24 campaign, the expectation was that Valencia would be suffering yet another relegation battle with off-field issues provoking on-pitch underperformance but, instead, they are actually challenging for a top seven finish and a potential return to European competition for next season, under the management of Ruben Baraja.

After avoiding the drop on the final day of last season, Valencia are already pretty much secure of their top-flight status. The home team do, though, come into this one on the back of a fairly flat 2-0 defeat at the hands of Atlético Madrid in their most recent outing, last weekend. Prior to that loss, they had enjoyed four successive La Liga victories.

ALMERIA

Much like their opposition, Almeria also avoided relegation on the final day of last season and they were also expecting to battle against the drop throughout this campaign but, unlike Valencia, they have badly struggled. The Andalusians begin the weekend rock-bottom in La Liga and already 11 points adrift of safety with 16 games left of the 2023/24 campaign.

Performances had begun to improve of late but then they suffered a 3-0 hammering at home to Alaves last weekend, leaving them reeling. Rubi, who is their third manager of the campaign, is in charge of a team that has collected six points with no victories so far this season, destined for the second-tier. They have conceded 49 goals in their 22 matches so far.

THE TEAM NEWS

VALENCIA

There are a couple of injury concerns for Valencia with Andre Almeida a doubt for this weekend, whilst Sergi Canos remains definitely unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Mamardashvili; Foulquier, Mosquera, Correia, Gaya; Perez, Guillamon, Pepelu, Guerra; Duro, Lopez

UNAVAILABLE: Canos (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Almeida (Injured)

ALMERIA

Almeria will continue to be without Luis Suarez and Arnau Puigmal for this weekend, whilst Ibrahima Kone is a doubt for the trip to Valencia.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Maximiano; Pubill, Montes, Chumi, Akieme; Lopy, Edgar; Arribas, Robertone, Embarba; Baptistao

UNAVAILABLE: Suarez (Injured), Puigmal (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Kone (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Even when playing well, Valencia have not necessarily been overwhelmingly convincing and they will require a reaction after their disappointing performance against Atlético last season. However, at home to a winless Almeria side who seemingly wasted their best chance at victory last week, this one should be a home win.

TIP: VALENCIA TO WIN
