THE LOWDOWN
SEVILLA
Sevilla spent much of last season in a relegation battle before rallying late on to get into mid-table and also getting past Manchester United and Juventus to win the UEFA Europa League. However, Jose Luis Mendilibar’s Andalusians have started this season as badly as ever and looked certain for another battle against the drop until his sacking ahead of the October international break.
He has been replaced by former Uruguay coach, Diego Alonso, who is taking charge of his first managerial job in Europe. Their 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano a couple of weeks ago means that they have started the 2023/24 campaign with just two victories in their opening 11 matches across all competitions.
REAL MADRID
A summer of uncertainty in the Spanish capital, with their captain Karim Benzema departing for the Saudi Pro League, as well as rumours over the departure of manager Carlo Ancelotti and consistent links to Kylian Mbappe, has not yet hampered Los Blancos too much on the pitch with their latest ‘galactico’, Jude Bellingham, starring so prominently.
Madrid have suffered just one defeat in their opening 11 matches across all competitions, with Bellingham notching ten in ten as well as some crucial winning goals and assists. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table as they await El Clasico against Barcelona, next weekend.

THE PREDICTION
Sergio Ramos will be facing his former club as Sevilla began the reign of Diego Alonso with an extremely tough test against an impressive Real Madrid side. The Andalusians have taken a risk on Alonso and it is expected that he may need a bit of time to bed in. Madrid will come into this with an array of stars that have had to be crucial during the international break so may feel a bit of fatigue. Their defensive issues, combined with that and Alonso’s intended style of football, means it could be quite an entertaining encounter.
