THE LOWDOWN

SEVILLA

Up until the March international break, Sevilla were in a relegation battle down at the bottom end of La Liga. However, after the appointment of back-to-basics coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, the Andalusians surged up the table and, in the meantime, defeated both Manchester United and Juventus over two legs before beating Roma on penalties in Budapest to win yet another UEFA Europa League title.

Their best performance this season once again came in Europe when they were unfortunate to share a 1-1 draw with Manchester City and then eventually lose on penalties to the 2022/23 treble winners in the UEFA Super Cup in Athens. Either side of that eventual loss, Sevilla have suffered defeats in La Liga, too, losing 2-1 at home to a depleted Valencia side and then 4-3 away to newly-promoted Alaves.

GIRONA

In 2022, Girona gained promotion back to the top-flight and, despite their relationship with Manchester City, did face a tough test to avoid relegation. However, the Catalans comfortably survived and actually flirted with a top seven finish in the end, under the entertaining management of Michel. Only the top five teams scored more than them but only the bottom four sides conceded more often.

They lost key players over the summer, such as Oriol Romeu and Valentin Castellanos, but have remained a strong side and they began the season with a creditable draw away to Real Sociedad. After that, they comfortably defeated a stubborn and difficult to beat Getafe side by three goals to nil last weekend to pick up where they left off from last season.

THE TEAM NEWS

SEVILLA

It has been a poor start to the campaign for Sevilla and they also have defensive injury issues with Tanguy Nianzou definitely out and Marcao a doubt for the game, too.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Dmitrovic; Navas, Bade, Gudelj, Pedrosa; Fernando, Rakitic; Ocampos, Suso, Lamela; Mir

UNAVAILABLE: Nianzou (Injured), Pastor (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Marcao (Injured)

GIRONA

Michel has a dilemma in attack with Cristhian Stuani starting the first game, Artem Dovbyk coming off the bench and scoring, then Dovbyk starting but Stuani coming off the bench and scoring a brace in their second match.

PREDICTED XI (X-X-X-X): Gazzaniga; Martinez, Blind, D Lopez, Gutierrez; A Garcia; Tsygankov, Herrera, Martin, Savio; Stuani

UNAVAILABLE: Bueno (Injured), Kebe (Injured), Casals (Injured), Artero (Injured), Villa (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Callens (Injured), Borja Garcia (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Jose Luis Mendilibar, whilst an old school coach with old school values and a resistance to anything ‘modern’ about the current game, does still produce front foot teams because they tend to be direct and finding the simplest ways of, simply, scoring goals. Given that they have had a poor start to the campaign but their two matches have consisted of ten goals and now they face a Girona side that are very high-scoring but also high-conceding, this could well be an entertaining encounter at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
